Storage unit sizes explained, 10 to 100 sq ft

Operators quote floor area in square feet, usually with an 8 ft ceiling. These are the seven sizes almost every London store offers, what people actually fit in them, and the Stackt plan that holds the same.

about 0.9 m² · typically 5 × 2 ft

About the size of a large hallway cupboard or a telephone box. Holds the overflow from one room.

How to work it out

How to work out what size you need

Four steps, ten minutes, and you will be within one size either way. With collection-based storage that is close enough.

List the large items

Beds, sofas, wardrobes, tables, appliances. Each one is roughly 5 to 10 sq ft of floor with things stacked on top. Ten large items is a 50 sq ft load.

Count the boxes

A medium box is about 1.5 sq ft on the floor and stacks four high. Forty boxes is about 15 sq ft stacked, so boxes matter less than furniture.

Use the calculator

Our storage calculator adds it up room by room and suggests a plan. Round down rather than up: a well-packed load is smaller than a guessed one.

Let the collection team confirm it

With Stackt the plan is adjusted to the real volume when we collect, so the estimate only needs to be close. With a self storage unit, you are locked to the size you rented.

Choosing between two sizes

Why the size matters less with Stackt

A self storage unit is a fixed box you rent whether you fill it or not. Ours is measured after packing.

Our team wraps and loads for density. A load that needs a 50 sq ft unit when you fill it yourself often measures 35 to 40 sq ft packed properly.

Square feet to square metres

Storage unit sizes in metres

UK operators price in square feet; furniture is measured in centimetres. One square metre is 10.76 sq ft, so divide the sq ft by roughly 11. Height is usually 8 ft (2.4 m), which is why a unit holds more than its floor area suggests: boxes stack.

Storage unit sizes, answered

The questions people ask before they pick a size.

Usually 50 sq ft: a double bed, wardrobe, sofa, the kitchen appliances and 40 to 50 boxes, with beds dismantled and boxes stacked to the ceiling. A minimal one-bed fits 35 sq ft; a one-bed with a home office or a lot of furniture needs 75. The Stackt equivalent is the Half of a Garage plan (48 sq ft), £26.94/week on a 6+ month term.
